L 'French Academy in Rome from Friday 29 May to Sunday, June 28th home designs by Ettore Scola, a journey into the surreal that will allow us to find out about the burlesque and satirical sketches by the famous director, cartoons, caricatures and sketches for set designs. L 'Atelier del Bosco di Villa Medici is the exhibition space in which they are shown to the public the 99 drawings which reveals hidden beauty that universe but less well known by Ettore Scola. Clipboard in images, scribble personal (as he calls them), made over a lifetime, in times and on a medium or another. The Italy of his time is represented through irony and bitterness, with a range of tragicomic characters where Scola puts in the small sedan charms of our modern society. It 'a surprise to discover that behind the journalist, humorist and a great film director, Ettore Scola end conceals a design that is capable, with a few essentials and wise, to give life as in his films, to a world of images that offer the Exploring the spectator and let me in a strange sense of amused melancholy.

A design is usually a project, organized first mentally then graphically, almost always inspired by the intentions of illustration, ornamental, commemorative and caricatures, run seminars, for patronage and for free.

My drawings instead - if you exclude the cartoons of my youth apprenticeship in the weekly "Marcus Aurelius" and some sketches jotted down during the preparation of a film to explain to myself and my colleagues an opportunity to start a character, a scene or a costume - are personal scribblings, most destined for the trash that the drawer. Doodles are mental, visual puns, signs, paths or some other distraction reflecting nothing. They always do, on sheets, towels, newspapers margins (almost never on sketch), a pencil, pen-ink (never with the hated biro). I will not being particularly gifted 'to the portrait to landscape it, my "subjects" are anonymous figures, walkers and bystanders who find the unreal reality in reference to their possible similarities, tics and behavior of ordinary daily life.

They are little people short existence in one dimension, with no gray areas, perplexed in the fixity of a nod or a glance, as when a sudden thought it freezes for a moment in a gesture in the air. Omit the suburbs, little women of modest houses, naked or dressed but always looking for an attitude that they hope to find maybe putting a hand into his pocket and having a cup in the other. Put in contrast, sons and fathers giant dwarf, husbands and wives minimum spill trying to get noticed with a peep allusion, an elegant step, a cheerful attitude which make us forget their monstrosity.

Humanity small and melancholy, if you really want to find a purpose, is there to say the funny side of existence. Which is what helps us find the courage to live.
